Origins and Formation

Metallica was formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield. The band’s early lineup was completed by guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney. However, as the band's sound and ambitions evolved, both Mustaine and McGovney were replaced—Mustaine by Kirk Hammett in 1983 and McGovney by Cliff Burton later that same year.
