Early Days and FormationMetallica was founded by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield. The duo met through an ad placed by Ulrich in a local Los Angeles newspaper. The initial lineup included guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney. However, internal conflicts and musical differences led to their departure, with Mustaine going on to form Megadeth and McGovney being replaced by Cliff Burton.
