Formation and Early Years

The genesis of Metallica can be traced back to an advertisement Ulrich placed in a Los Angeles newspaper seeking musicians to jam with. Hetfield answered, and the duo quickly formed a bond over their shared love for bands like Diamond Head, Motorhead, and Black Sabbath. Guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney initially joined the lineup, but it was the arrival of bassist Cliff Burton and the replacement of Mustaine with Kirk Hammett in 1983 that solidified the classic Metallica lineup.
