Dream Theater, an American progressive metal band, has long been celebrated for its complex compositions, virtuosic musicianship, and influential role in the evolution of the progressive metal genre. Formed in 1985 by John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), and Mike Portnoy (drums), the band originated at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Initially named Majesty, the band quickly garnered attention for their technical proficiency and ambitious musical aspirations. However, due to a trademark conflict, they changed their name to Dream Theater, inspired by a small cinema in Monterey, California.
