Formation and Early Years

Formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex, England, Depeche Mode began as a synth-pop group consisting of Dave Gahan (lead vocals), Martin Gore (guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals), Andy Fletcher (keyboards), and Vince Clarke (keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals). Clarke, who was instrumental in the band’s initial sound, left after their debut album, Speak & Spell (1981), making way for Alan Wilder, who would later become a significant force in shaping the band's sound.
