Origins and Formation

Black Sabbath's origins trace back to the early 1960s when four young men—Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward—began playing together in various configurations. Initially known as the Polka Tulk Blues Band and later as Earth, the group underwent a transformation both in name and musical direction. By 1968, they had rebranded themselves as Black Sabbath, inspired by the horror film of the same name and driven by a desire to create music that was darker and more intense than their contemporaries.
